Councilor at Large Valerie Gilman Endorses Mayor Verga
On September 16, in the mayoral preliminary election, 21% of Gloucester voters advanced two experienced and respected public servants, Mayor Greg Verga and former City Councilor Paul Lundberg. As someone who has worked closely with both, I know they share a deep love for our city and its heritage, a commitment to education and housing, and a strong sense of respect and integrity. Gloucester is fortunate to have such capable leaders. But when it comes to who is best prepared to lead us forward, I’m endorsing Greg Verga for a third term as Mayor.
Why? First, Mayor Verga boasts a proven track record of solid leadership and vision. After hiring our City’s first sustainability coordinator, Mayor Verga and his current leadership team and his appointed Planning Board, then led a two-year, community-driven comprehensive planning process with over 3,800 resident engagements, resulting in a bold master plan published in July 2025. If re-elected he is the most qualified to execute this plan. Second, he has delivered many accomplishments. Under his leadership, Gloucester has tackled beach traffic, introduced free parking for veterans, offset municipal electricity usage by 50% with renewable energy, improved parks and roads, and invested in our vocational programs. His leadership also helped complete our Police/Courthouse renovation and supported the building of 73 affordable housing units. Third, like his predecessor, Mayor Verga has fostered strong partnerships with state and regional leaders. His excellent relationships and resulting endorsements with the current Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and District Attorney have helped and will continue to help secure funding, grants and advance economic opportunities for our City.
Some discussion continues about Mayor Verga’s gesture during the teachers’ strike. It was not directed at teachers. When Greg was rushing home to support his wife, who was fearful of the loud protesters in front of their house, a former public safety employee surged towards his vehicle while shouting at the Mayor. Greg owned his mistake and apologized publicly for his inappropriate gesture towards this individual. One fifteen second lapse in judgement should not define an 18-year record of dedicated public service.
At the end of this year, I am retiring after sixteen years as an elected official. I remain proud of our city, its people, and our progress. I urge you to re-elect Greg Verga as Mayor, an experienced, steady, and committed leader who will keep Gloucester moving forward.
Most importantly, please exercise your right to vote on Tuesday, November 4.
